Missouri Dental Assistant Schools and Training Programs
Dental Assistant Careers
There is a growing need for dental assistants, as dentists are increasingly allowing them to do more, so they can concentrate on more complex procedures. Younger patients are also wanting more cosmetic and preventive care.
Dental assistants work in clean and well-lighted environments, and many continue their education and training to become hygienists or start their own dental practice.
Roles and Responsibilities of a Dental Assistant
A dental assistant usually spends the most time with a patient, so they must combine empathy with professionalism. They must make sure that patients are seated comfortably in the dental chair. Dental assistants will assist their dentist whenever necessary, plus will be required to sterilize instruments, make impressions of patient’s teeth, plus take and develop x-rays. They will explain the necessary preventive care that each patient must take for their particular situation. In some offices, dental assistants will also handle billing and paperwork
Salary Outlook
Average earnings for dental assistants in Missouri are about 27K, with beginners making 22K and most experienced making 32K. This equals to between $12 to $17 an hour. This should increase along with greater demand for dental assistants.
Educational Requirements
A dental assistant career does not require a college degree. Most academic dental assistant programs take about 9 to 11 months to complete. Some schools offer accelerated and part-time programs. Part of required education can be taken online. Graduates usually receive certificates. Two year associate degrees are also offered at community and technical colleges.
