Overview of San Antonio Dental Assistant Program

While training to become a dental assistant you can expect to gain the skills and knowledge that are necessary to perform effectively in a dental practice. Training is designed to prepare students for the exam of Certification of Registration. This is required by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners. The exam may also include radiological procedures for this certification as well. Training includes front office training, charting, instrument sterilization, setting up trays, radiographs, maintaining equipment, model trimming, impressions, four-hand dentistry, infection control and preventative dentistry and nutrition.

Many dental assistants are required to help perform office duties along with their usual dental assistant skills. Programs often include training in office skills as well as typical dental assistant training. Courses that can also be required include dental terminology, dental records and charting, basic accounting and dental insurance.

Other required courses include clinical skills in a dental office setting. The student will learn restorative procedures and materials, dental x-rays and safety, preparing bleach trays, impressions and models, and some specialty practices such as periodontics and orthodontics.
