Dental Assistant Responsibilities
A dental assistant’s main responsibility is to help the dentist and the dental office with patient care. The responsibilities may range from keeping the patient’s records up-to-date to making impressions of the patient’s teeth. Other responsibilities typically include: Putting on topical anesthetic Suture removal Putting on bleaching compounds or fissure and pit sealants Creating and setting in place temporary crowns Taking and processing dental x-rays (also called radiographs) Getting the patient’s medical history Scheduling patient’s appointments Taking a patient’s pulse and blood pressure Instructing patient’s on special oral health care after surgery or another dental treatment
Dental Assistant Educational Requirements
A Certified Dental Assistant certificate is awarded when the student passes a CDA course that is accredited by the American Dental Association (ADA). Training can usually be completed in 9 to 11 months through campus-based and online programs. Typically, students will have classes on physiology, anatomy and dental terminology.
