Dental Assistant Roles and Responsibilities
On an average, the dental assistant works between 35- to 40-hours per week performing multiple tasks while working with patients, dental records, assisting the dentist and working in the laboratory. While working with patients, the dental assistant will make the patient comfortable and prepare the patient for the upcoming procedures either performed by the dental hygienist or dentist. The assistant works along side of the dentist during dental procedures by preparing the area for work using sterilization techniques, handing the dentist instruments and ensuring the patient’s mouth is kept clear and dry during the procedure. If certified, the dentist assistant will take X-rays when requested. In the laboratory, the dental assistant makes casts of teeth, performs maintenance of removable appliances and makes temporary crowns.
